Data, calls and phone numbers: what is actually included?

An internet connection and a phone number meet different needs. Here is what to look for.

An eSIM is not a list of included services

The word eSIM describes how a mobile subscription is installed on a compatible device. To understand what you are buying, read the plan details separately: data allowance, voice minutes, SMS and any included number. Do not assume that a data plan includes all four.

Separate internet calls from carrier calls

Calling inside an app over the internet is different from using voice minutes from a mobile plan. The app may have its own account, contact and payment requirements. If you need to reach ordinary phone numbers, check that the calling service supports the destinations you need and review its prices.

Choose the right line on a dual-SIM phone

Compatible dual-SIM phones let you choose which line handles mobile data and which is used for calls or messages. Check these preferences after adding a travel eSIM; keeping your usual line active does not make its roaming services free.

Before leaving, make a short checklist of what you need: internet access, outgoing calls, incoming calls or messages. Match each need to a service explicitly included in your plan, rather than relying on the plan name.
